Managing your references

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to manage your references in Zotero.

By the end of this tutorial, you'll be able to:

1. Overview: Managing references

2. Using Collections

To practice organizing your references into folders, complete the tasks below.

  1. Create a folder and a subfolder.
  2. Rename a folder.
  3. Make a subfolder a top-level folder.
  4. Select multiple references to add to your folder and sub folder.
  • Select a group of consecutive references
  • Select a group of non-consecutive references
  1. Delete your new folder, without deleting the references.

3. Adding notes

A 'Child note' is a note which is linked to an item/reference in your library.

'Standalone notes' are separate documents in your Zotero library. They are not directly related to any item in your library unless you link them.

To practice adding notes to your library, complete the tasks below.

  1. Add a 'Child note' to a reference:
  • Add a note to a reference
  • Open the note in a separate window
  • Add a heading and centre it
  1. Add a 'Standalone note' to your library:
  • Add a standalone note to your library
  • Add some Bold text
  • Add a hyperlink

4. Adding tags

To practice adding tags to your library, complete the tasks below.

  1. Add multiple tags to 5 references
  2. Filter your results by a tag
  3. Delete a tag from a single reference
  4. Delete a tag from all references
  5. Rename a tag for all items
  6. Add a colour to a tag

5. Related items

To practice creating relations between references, complete the task below.

  1. Select and reference in your library and link it to:
  • A standalone note
  • Two other references in your library
  1. Now remove the links between the references.

6. Removing Duplicates

To practice removing duplicates from your library, complete the task below.

You’ll need to add an item twice. Using the web importer, add the following article from 2 different sources. Source 1: Library Search  /  Source 2: Journal homepage

  1. Go to to the 'Duplicates collection'
  2. Compare both versions and choose which item is the master copy
  3. Select different fields to include from the other version in this master copy.
  4. Merge them.
