Why am I getting a message while looking at an ebook?
For some titles, users get the opportunity to browse for 5 minutes without charge to the Library. It's fine to read more though. If, at the end of the 5 minutes you think the book will be useful, just click to continue if you want to read more.
Can I read an ebook if someone else is reading it at the same time?
Yes, most of the time. Some ebooks have restrictions on the number of simultaneous users. If so, you will be prompted to try again later.
Can I print, copy and paste from ebooks?
Yes, you can. However, there are sometimes limits created by the publishers and also sometimes copyright limits, which are usually shown when you try to do one of these options.
What software do I need to download?
You can read our ebooks without downloading them to your machine. However, if you want to read the books offline, for many library books you will need Adobe Digital Editions. If you haven't already downloaded this the platform usually provides a link to do so.
Do I have to be online to read my ebook once downloaded?
No, you should be able to read the ebook offline once downloaded. When the download period has expired (which is controlled automatically), you will have to go online to download again if you want to continue using it.
Can I keep my ebooks for ever?
Many of our ebooks can now be downloaded permanently. For others they are like printed library books – available for you to use for a period but not yours to own.
How do I reference ebooks?
The Library produces a guide to citing references for all kinds of information resources, including ebooks.
What do I do if an ebook doesn’t work, or if I can’t access it?
If you're having difficulties accessing an ebook, please use our 'Ask us a question' box at the bottom of this page between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday or the Contact Us pages.
I am having problems printing from an ebook
Library ebooks are subject to copyright law and some publishers put restrictions on the number of pages you can print out.
Do I need a password to access an ebook off campus?
In order to access any of our online resources from off campus, it is necessary to login, using your ITS login details.
Can library users without a University login access ebooks?
Some electronic resources are available for use in the library only. For a list of the resources, see our Visitor Access Service.
Does it matter which internet browser I use?
You can read our ebooks on any modern browser.
Can I read an ebook on a Mac?
Yes.
